Designing with Health in Mind:

The Inherent Properties of Japanese Timber

Presented by Simon Love

This presentation will highlight the importance of materials selection on indoor air quality. Sighting peer reviewed research to identify both the potential risks of poor selections against proven materials that can provide long term health and wellbeing outcomes. Japanese timber species have inherent properties that can improve air quality and lower blood pressure, coupled with this natural, sustainable coatings create a beautiful look with no toxic chemicals. The presentation will provide examples of design applications in residential homes, commercial buildings and public spaces.

The presentation also provides a brief history into one of the oldest sustainable forestry's in the world.

At the end of this presentation attendees will be able to understand:

  • Have an understanding on the history of the Japanese forestry system.
  • Understand the impact of poor indoor air quality, in health and monetary terms.
  • Gain knowledge of the proven health benefits of designing with Japanese timber species and natural coating products.

Galvanized Steel and Sustainable Construction

Presented by David Harrison

Concerns about the effects of climate change are both serious and urgent. With a growing world population and a consequent increasing use of engineered materials, the need to maximise the value of raw materials by keeping buildings, infrastructure, resources and materials in use for as long as possible is clear.

This CPD outlines the building sectors impact on climate change and closely examines the link between durability, sustainable construction and life cycle costs. The difference between VOC’s and carbon footprint is explained and how the unique properties of hot dipped galvanized coatings support sustainable construction and the circular economy is described in detail.

HDG steel is ideally placed to enable design for durability, deconstruction, disassembly and flexibility as well as the reuse, recovery and remanufacture of materials.

At the end of this presentation attendees will be able to understand:

  • The building sectors impact on climate change
  • How the unique properties of HDG coatings support sustainable construction and the circular economy.
  • Coatings, VOC’s and carbon footprint
  • Sustainable construction and the circular economy.
  • The link between durability, sustainable construction and life cycle costs.
